It was real early as I walked down the hallway of my high school. I was in senior high (SS1).

I walked forward and heard disturbing noise so I hastened my steps and found the reason and the person behind it.

He was my senior and the son of one of the parents on the school board. He was harassing a junior student, a girl that was just about the age of my youngest sister.

I was really pissed so I walked up to him, stood right in his front and told him to respect himself and pick someone his own size. He was acting cynically but I stood up to him and he walked away. I went and spoke to the younger girl and encouraged her to know she had a voice and she wasn’t alone.

Tonight I remember this story and want you, everyone of you to remember it too. Not so you think I’m some hero.

You need to remember it so you know that your voice matters.

You need to remember it so you at least feel the sting of shame every time you stand at the corner at injustice.

It doesn’t matter who you are, what size or color you are. You need to become the change you want to see.

If you think something’s wrong where you are, don’t just fold your hands and say may God bring change.

Get uncomfortable looking at injustice and wrong doing. Ask God to show you in what way you can make a difference. Then stand up and do it.

Get tired of the excuse of fear and punishment. Become like Esther and determine to become the change you seek. Determine to fight for the life you know we can live and resolve to do all it takes whether it means you live or you die.

If you’re not living for something, you may as well be dead. We don’t need people just filling up the universe. We have enough benchers as it is.

Remember that when you stand, you stand in the power of God.

Ephesians 6:10 – 11 says:

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

This will demand that you get on your knees in prayer.

It will require that you get up and make a difference right where you are.

Your voice matters and God has given you influence in that space that you are.

You are not living just for you. Determine that you will change. Don’t wait for it to become popular. Sometimes you will have to stand even when no one’s looking or standing with you. God is proud of you.

If you have ever stood like Saul did and applauded injustice or you were just a silent observer, you are part of the problem. Determine to get a new mindset. For change, true change happens when people have a new heart, a new mindset. When there’s a mind renewal true change can be birthed.

Romans 12:1-2 says it well;

Therefore, I urge you brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

This is more than an appeal. It’s a wake up call. Stop sleeping. It’s time to Turn (Repent) and Confront (Take a Stand).
