I was chatting with a friend last night and from miles away, I could feel her tension and exhaustion. Just like Martha, she was worried about so many things. And like Martha, they were important stuff.
To be candid, I can so relate. Look around you, there’s so much to be worried about. And a lot of times it’s not just worrisome, it’s overwhelming. And more than, it’s scary. People have panic attacks these days over the things they go through or the things they think about.
A few weeks ago, I went for a seminar and for a few minutes, I had the privilege of speaking to the wife of the facilitator. She said some things that are ingrained in my spirit.
She said, ‘I don’t let anything mess with my peace and my joy. Anything that messes with my peace and my joy have to go. I drop it instantly and intentionally because anything that preys on my peace and joy will prevent me from hearing God.’
So I understand why Jesus said to Martha, ‘You are worried and upset about so many things but only one thing is necessary and Mary has chosen the better thing and it will not be taken away from her.’
What did Mary choose? Some personal time with Jesus.
It also makes sense why after Jesus’ crazy schedule, the meetings, the arguments the miracles, he always withdrew by himself to have some personal time with the Father.
Because in this crazy world we’re in, with the noise and tension around us, the expectations, the disappointments and excitement we face on a daily, it’s important to withdraw from all the noise and have some personal time with Jesus. Some alone time.
If you don’t, it’s only a matter of time before you burn out. And when you feel restless, go somewhere you can be alone with Jesus. And find rest and strength to move on.
